Certain types of expanded polystyrene can also be used for packaging in the food and pharmaceutical sector. The material that is expanded under high pressure provides a very smooth surface, allowing enhanced presentation of some products.

Due to the insulating characteristics of EPS (fire decelerating), this material is frequently used in construction e.g., floors on the ground floor. Obviously, the development of building materials is very specific work and radically different from packaging. However, Van der Heijden Nederland is also active in this market and possesses the KOMO (KIWA) quality mark.

Expanded polystyrene

Expanded polystyrene – better known as EPS – is strong and light and provides a good protection for all your products. EPS consists of air (98%) and of the synthetic material ‘polystyrene’ (2%). It is lightweight and has excellent insulating capacities. EPS is indifferent to moisture and is very hygienic. It is strong, pressure-resistant and has high shock-absorbing capacities. Large series are produced using aluminium moulds. However, if the product series cannot bear the investment cost of a mould we are able to produce small series by hand. We use very accurate measuring guides and these small EPS packaging series range from packing sheets to fully-fledged interiors.

We process EPS in various densities because every product demands a different type of packaging. The density is determined using drop tests, resulting in the choice of the optimal density and the efficient utilisation of packaging material. Hand-made models are manufactured for these drop tests in order to thoroughly test the packaging.
